Here is a vintage japan made Yamaha FG-280 dreadnought acoustic guitar.
Solid spruce top and (not absolutely sure, but strongly suspect) ovangkol
back and sides. Ovangkol has a similar tonal profile to rosewood.
Note that these rarely come up for sale in the UK. It's an excellent sounding guitar!

I purchased this a few months ago with the intention to get back into
steel string acoustic playing. I've decided to stay with nylon string guitars,
hence sale.
As one can see from the photos, it's not in pristine condition, and has a few
cosmetic marks. For me, this adds to its mojo and charm. The guitar is
structurally sound - straight neck, working truss rod, straight top (i.e. no bellying).
This was the main consideration that prompted my purchase.
The guitar came with badly worn frets. The seller was candid about this, so I
knew I would have to invest in a full refret of the guitar. This has now been carried
out by Andrew at Richmond Guitar Workshop, west London at a cost of £330
(see job invoice photo). A full setup was done along with the mods listed below:
- full refret of the fretboard
- old nut replaced with a new Graph Tech TUSQ one
- old bridge saddle replaced with a quality bone one
- old non-Yamaha machine heads replaced with correct Yamaha machine
heads without covers (good quality second hand)
- old bridge pins replaced with high quality ebony ones
- JJB Electronics Artist Series 330 Prestige passive piezo pickup installed
This guitar's intonation and playability is now optimised. One is good to go
with this guitar. It has been strung with Ernie Ball Earthwood Phosphor
Bronze Lights (11-52). The guitar technician has assured me that the guitar
is structurally sound enough to accommodate a medium light string gauge
set (i.e. 12-54s), although it should be done by a guitar technician to tweak
the truss rod and set the correct intonation for the higher tension string gauge.
You can be assured that this guitar has been restored by a well-respected
guitar technician. Andrew used to work at Chandler's back in the day before
they closed. If you're a guitarist of a certain age who lives in London, I'd
assume you know of their prestige. A lot of big name guitarists entrusted their
guitars to be repaired/setup by them.
The guitar comes with a good quality hard case.
Interested persons are welcome to tryout the guitar with no obligation to purchase.
Collection only from Ealing, west London.
