About the Thing:

The Volkswagen Type 181 is four-door,convertible manufactured and marketed by VW from 1968 to 1983. Originally developed for the West German Army the Type 181 also entered the civilian market as the Kurierwagen ("courier car") in West Germany, the Trekker (RHD Type 182) in the United Kingdom, the Thing in the United States (1973-74), the Safari in Mexico and South America, and Pescaccia in Italy. Civilian sales ended after model year 1980.

Manufactured in Wolfsberg (1968-74), Hannover (1974-83), Puebla, Mexico (1970-80), and Jakarta Indonesia (1973-80), the Type 181 shared its mechanicals with the VW Beetle and the pre 1968 Microbus, floor pan with the Type 1 Karmann Ghia its concept with the Kubelwagen which had been used by the German military.

All four doors were removable and interchangeable, the windshield folded flat, and the convertible roof could be removed for al fresco driving. The spartan interior featured vinyl covered bucket seats, painted sheet metal, drain holes and perforated rubber mats. A fiberglass hardtop and trunk-mounted auxiliary heater were offered as individual options.

And it can be anything. It has a top that goes down, doors that come off, a windshield that flips down.

Its good for the country and good for the city because even though its tough you don't have to be tough to drive it.

Exterior:

Having been born in Mexico, raised in Southern Cali and named after The Hoff it was imperative that the next chapter for Mitch harked back to its roots. Consequently, a Tequila Sunrise theme developed. Firstly, the bodywork was stripped to bare metal, a task that was easier said than done. Like so many of these vehicles it had seen several incarnations over the years and had been painted with several layers of coach paint. Despite the warm climate it had also succumbed to tin worm in some areas. Once the stripped, the shell and body where painstakingly inspected and lovingly prepared before several repairs were made including new sills and carefully restoring the window frame as replacement was not an option. New higher and wider front wings where sourced from the USA too and after a 3 month wait the body was ready for paint. A stunning respray was undertaken in three tone Yellow to Red Orange fade. This was complimented by custom stubby bumpers, side steps, matching banded steel wheels and lastly as a final nod to the California dub scene an airbrushed sun on the bonnet. The results are stunning, it could be equally at home in Malibu, the Kings Road or Abersoch

Interior:

The interior was trimmed to match the exterior by Harlequin Upholstery. The dash is painted body colour. The seats where remoulded and the retrimmed in black and orange, new black carpets with orange contrast were fitted and the door cards, visors and wheel all also trimmed to match. In addition to the above a new shifter was fitted and a roll bar and seat belts. Finally, the audio was installed including a custom speaker box in the rear trimmed in orange vinyl to match the exterior. The weather gear and Black Hood are in fantastic condition with the later benefiting from a recent vinyl rear screen replacement.

Technical and mechanical upgrades:

Significant investment has also gone into the mechanicals as well the pretty bits. The engine is not only beautifully detailed to match the body but fully rebuilt to 1641cc with Webber carbs with all new ancillaries. The clutch, exhaust and braking systems were also brand new.

Overview:

With just 1000 dry miles covered since completion it is just run in and offers a fantastic route in to Restomod classic ownership as either a weekend toy to polish, show and enjoy or perhaps a play thing to keep at your place by the sea. As a registered historic vehicle, it is both MOT and Tax except and eligible for classic insurance policies. We have a huge history file for the vehicle including photo documentation of the work undertaken.
