In Brief:
Irredentism was a political movement that promoted the unification to Italy of the Italian-speaking areas of Switzerland during the Risorgimento. This was a political and social movement that gathered different states of the Italian peninsula into the single state of Italy in the 19th century. In southern Switzerland those ideals were minimally followed until the creation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 and up to World War I. The last area did not join the Kingdom of Italy until after World War I.
