Boasting lots of RAM and a new processor from Intel's second-generation Core (aka "Sandy Bridge") family, the Toshiba Satellite M645-S4116 ($879.99 direct) is not hurting for performance potential. If you're looking for capabilities that also extend to the more intense graphics realm, or for outstanding battery life, you won't find them on this laptop. But the M645-S4116 is able in many situations, and could be a fine choice if making those small compromises is no problem for you.

  Design

The all-black M645-S4116 bears Toshiba's Fusion finish, a texture to the plastic used on the lid and around the keyboard to reduce smudging and fingerprints; this gives it an attractive look, if not the most eye-catching you'll find. The keyboard is of the conscientious chiclet style used on higher-end Toshiba laptops, and is relatively comfortable, with the keys offering a soft but efficient typing experience. The 14-inch widescreen maxes out at a resolution of 1,366 by 768, a generic but workable display for this system. The laptop weighs about 4.8 pounds, coming in only slightly heavier than our current Editors' Choice for mainstream laptops, the Asus U41JF-A1 ($857 street, 4.5 stars).

  Features

Based on the Sandy Bridge processing platform, the M645-S4116 is intended for use in a wide variety of everyday tasks, with a focus on media chores. The hardware it possesses underscores this: a 2.3-GHz Core i5-2410M CPU (capable of running as fast as 2.9 GHz when Turbo Boost is active), 6GB of RAM, Intel HD Graphics 3000 (the most powerful of the two Sandy Bridge options), and a fairly spacious 500GB hard drive. Another nice touch is the Harman Kardon stereo speaker system, which delivered attractively rich audio quality. The operating system is the expected Windows 7 Home Premium; Microsoft Office Starter 2010 and a 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security 2011 are also included.

You can output video via either an HDMI jack or a VGA port, both of which are found on the M645-S4116′s right edge; that's also where you'll find the headphone and microphone jacks and a USB 3.0 port for high-speed data transfers with compatible devices. The optical drive, a DVD burner, is located on the system's left edge, along with the Ethernet port and two USB 2.0 ports.

The M645-S4116 also supports Intel's Wireless Display (WiDi) technology, which lets you connect the laptop to an HDTV over Wi-Fi rather than cables. The Hard Drive Impact Sensor "parks" the system's hard drive if it detects the laptop is being sharply or suddenly moved; during our testing, we found this rather annoying, as the feature popped up a window at the slightest nudge, and not just if the laptop was in significant danger.

  Performance

The M645-S4116 delivered better scores on our performance tests than a number of other recent laptops in its class. The Toshiba completed our Handbrake video-encoding test in 2 minutes and 35 seconds, a full three seconds faster than the Asus U41JF-A1; our Photoshop CS5 filtering test in 4 minutes and 10 seconds, a full 42 seconds ahead of the Asus and 31 seconds ahead of the HP Envy 14-1210NR ($999.99 list, 4 stars); and its 2.61 score on CineBench R11.5 is the highest we've seen in this category (the next closest is the Envy's 2.42). On the full-system PCMark Vantage benchmark test, the Toshiba came in second only to the Envy, with a score of 6,121 (versus 6,386).

Because the Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated graphics system is aimed more at media than 3D, we weren't surprised that the M645-S4116 turned in considerably lower results on our gaming tests. We saw 3DMark 06 scores of 4,819 (at 1,024 by 768, using the default settings) and 3,744 (at the laptop's native resolution of 1,366 by 768, with 4x anisotropic filtering enabled), in both cases well below laptops like the Envy (7,476; 6,206) and the Asus (8,189; 6,931), which have discrete graphics. At 1,024 by 768, the M645-S4116 managed only 18.8 frames per second (fps) in Lost Planet 2, and at the native resolution with the detail settings increased we saw frame rates of 10.1 fps; in both cases near the bottom of the pack (with scores of 15.5 fps and 7.1 fps respectively, the Samsung QX410-J01, $829.99 street, 4 stars, was slightly lower). Crysis wasn't much better: 12.8 fps at 1,024 by 768, whereas the Envy saw 51.7 fps and the Asus 46.6 fps. (The game's benchmark would not run at the native resolution on the Toshiba.) These frame rates are not realistically playable; if you're interested in using your laptop for more than casual gaming, a machine with discrete graphics is a must.

Using the MobileMark 2007 rundown test, we averaged 4 hours and 40 minutes of life on the M645-S4116′s 48 Wh battery. That's on the low side compared to other models in the same price range, such as the Asus U41JF-A1 (8 hours) and the Samsung QX410-J01 (6 hours 27 minutes), but marginally better than the HP Envy 14-1210NR (4 hours 30 minutes).

Its lack of gaming credibility and robust battery life aside, the Toshiba Satellite M645-S4116 competes well with other similarly priced models such as the Editors' Choice Asus U41JF-A1 and the HP Envy 14-1210NR. As long as you plan to restrict your use of the M645-S4116 to productivity applications, and you never need to stray into more demanding graphics territory, this laptop should suit you admirably.
