Attention collectors, coin & stamp buffs & philatelists!!!
You are looking at a rare collectible piece; a one-of-a-kind silver coin with a commemorative 1976 First-Day-Cover of Thomas Paine who published the book called ?Common Sense? in January 10, 1776. This mint coin is part of a series of Medallic Postal Cover, combining historical US stamps with limited edition medals that are postmarked on a date of historic significance.
This silver medallion and envelop is postmarked January 10th, 1976 celebrating the anniversary of the book ?Common Sense? written by Thomas Paine on this date ~200 years ago to inspire the people in the new colonies against the British during the US Revolutionary War.
Thomas Paine is well known as one of the Founding Fathers of the United States as well as an author and pamphleteer, which is a historical term for someone who creates or distributes pamphlets. In January 1776 Paine published Common Sense, anonymously because of its treasonous content. The book sold over 500,000 copies in the first year, and inspired millions of people against British rule. Thomas donated his royalties from ?Common Sense? to George Washington's continental army.
The uncirculated coin was minted to commemorate Thomas Paine?s dedication and the significant role he played in the American Revolutionary War. It?s hard to overstate the impact this short book had both on the leaders of the American Revolution and, more importantly, on the wider population.
On the front side of the coin is a portrait of Mr. Paine writing with a feather-quill pen with the words ?ENGLAND TO EUROPE ? AMERICA TO ITSELF? on top. The back side has the inscription ?THOMAS PAINE PUBLISHED ?COMMON SENSE? ISSUE NO. 31, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania?. In quotations it also has ?THIS IS THE SEED-TIME OF CONTINENTAL UNION?.
This Commemorative Medal is sealed in the original package. Both medal and stamps are in excellent condition ready to be included into any assembly of stamp and coin collections. It would also be a great gift for a serious philatelist, hobbyist, or the beginning coin & stamp collector.
