  Sweetie's story

Meet Sweetie! Sweetie is an adorable, amazing, 16 year old beagle who is in fantastic shape for her age. She loves kisses, snuggles, treats, and cuddles, and will never turn down the spare french fry or chicken nugget as a special treat.

Sweetie was surrendered by her owner of nearly 10 years when they could no longer care for her. She lived her whole life outside with only a heated igloo and dog bowl for company, and while she's transitioned beautifully into an inside dog, she has a few issues that are remnants of her prior life her new family will have to be understanding of. She becomes very attached to her people - because of this, Sweetie needs someone who either works from home or is retired and able to stay with her most of the time. We'd also recommend a secure, fenced in back yard - as she LOVES the outdoors - and tends to be a runner (she will be a door darter so having a yard would remedy this well). A yard will also help with Sweetie's housetraining. Because of her age, and the fact that she was never taught to signal when she has to go - Sweetie must go out several times a day. She will relieve herself when she is outside, she just also may have accidents inside. She tends to know that it's unwanted, as she'll try to avoid eye contact when she does have one - but her new people will need to be gentle and understanding of this. In essence, someone who is home during the day could let her out several times - so she may not have a single accident. It's all a matter of timing and schedule.

While it may seem that her challenges are lengthy - her foster mom assures you they are not. She said, "This is quite possibly, the sweetest most loving dog I've ever fostered in nearly 10 years of fostering dogs and cats." She takes awhile to warm up to other dogs - and would prefer dog friends who can allow her her own space. However, she's recently been seen doing zoomies and playing with the 14 year old pitbull resident who lives in her foster home (a surprise to her foster mom, as the resident rarely plays as well!). She is in no way cat aggressive - but she is oblivious to cat-language, so during the first few weeks, we recommend supervised visits between her and any feline companions - because she has a tendency to get into their personal space and they might swat or hiss. Her only reaction is to yelp and run away.

She currently lives in a foster home with two small children. One 4.5 year old, and one autistic 3 year old. She is fine with the 4.5 year old, but when the younger child gets loud, she tends to get nervous, and will pace or try to "run away" to a safe space.

Sweetie will most undoubtedly steal your spot on the couch the minute you get up with a speed akin to some kind of freakish ninja, and despite your protestations, will only offer up that soulful look that always makes you give in and sit on the floor.

Sweetie has so much love to give. She spent so many years outside, alone with only the sky to talk to - she'd love to spend the rest of her retirement years on her back getting belly rubs and snoring (and chasing those squirrels in her dreams, as she does bark and howl in her sleep!) next to you! Please consider giving her a forever home - she'd be eternally grateful! If interested in Sweetie, please visit for an application today! Any questions can be sent to [email protected]!
