I'm Smokey! a 1yr old, 17lb Lhasa Apso. S ome useful information that I hope will lead to my permanent home.

I have an easy going personality(most of the time). I have been living with my 2 foster dads and their 3 dogs and 2 cats. A typical day is going out for walks, going to Morley Field and going on errands with one of my foster dads. I prefer to be close to my dads and I like to curl up next to them or sometimes take naps at the foot of the bed.

You might say I have an independent personality. If you take off my leash I will run off to explore. Even if you call me I probably will just keep going. So its a good idea to always have me on leash if the area isnt fenced.

I dont like being left alone and if one or both of my dads are in a separate room, I will bark up a storm. This usually lasts for 3-5 minutes and then Ill settle down.

If they both leave the house at the same time, I sometimes get anxious and bark on and off for 30 or 40 minutes. A single detached home is where I will fit the best. I have to say that I dont bark as much as I used to. I know my foster dads will return within an hour or two.

I have been adopted twice. My foster parents were surprised it didnt work out. The first meet and greet with the adopters was great. I was friendly and playful and got along with their dogs. In both cases the homes were very nice and both owners worked from home. Super. So, what was the problem? Basically, my new owners meant well, but they moved too fast. They took me to their friends and relatives places to have me meet them. Then one family invited their grandchildren over to play with me. This all happened wIthin the first week after being adopted. I dont do well with kids so an adult only home is required. Being rehomed is always stressful and somewhat fearful. My foster dads are suddenly gone and everything around me is unknown. So, when I felt overwhelmed I wanted to be alone. But people kept wanting to get in my space. To tell them nicely I wanted to be alone, I growled and snapped as a warning. I wish I could speak to them in English so they would understand that: I need a week or more just to become acquainted with my new parents and new living quarters. Keep in mind Im terribly homesick for my foster family. So instead of introducing me to new people right away, just focus on me and my new family and build that relationship first.

My first foster dad knew I was uncomfortable those first few days so he provided a comfortable bed, good food and took me for walks. He was around but never directly approached except to go on walks. He would sit near my bed but never got too close. After a week I began to follow him around the house. He still didnt try to pick me up. He just let me feel free to explore. Id say it took two months for me to feel at home. Whoever adopts me needs to be patient and very understanding. I can be a great companion given the right environment. Give me time and space and over time a beautiful relationship will begin to emerge. Probably not a good fit for apartment living. Smokey is neutered, microchipped and current on his vaccines. His adoption fee is $250 which helps Second Chance Dog Rescue cover spay/neuter costs, vaccinations, medical treatments, food and supplies. Please fill out an Adoption Application to learn more and/or meet Smokey.

All of our dogs are in private volunteer foster homes, and as such these individuals are most qualified to answer any questions regarding the dog.

We do not have a central shelter or kennel locations - you must make a private one-on-one meet and greet appointment with each individual dog at the foster family's convenience. To protect our foster families' privacy, we must have an APPROVED adoption application on file before we release their contact information.

All of our dogs are fixed (spayed/neutered) and up to date on shots. We have a 2 week foster-to-adopt period to make sure the dog is a fit for your family. Adoption fees vary from dog-to-dog.

Please note that an approved application DOES NOT guarantee that the dog will be placed with you. The final decision rests with our fosters as they know the dogs the best, and please be aware that there may be other applicants interested in the same dog. We continue accepting applications on a dog until the dog is with the new adoptive family in their home.
