Small Antique Stanley Metal Wood Block Plane (#257) $25
Attention antique woodworking tool collectors?.check this out!!!
You are looking at an antique Stanley finger rest knob Block metal wood plane, #103, made in the USA around the turn of the century. These block planes were designed for smaller jobs where the tool can be held with one hand to take down a knot, smoothing up small pieces and/or shaping wood.
In the mid 1860s, Leonard Bailey for Boston, MA, a tool designer, began producing a line of cast iron-bodied hand planes, and the patents were later purchased by Stanley Rule & Level, now Stanley Works. Bailey?s design became the foundation for most modern metal hand planes manufactured today. The Bailey design is still manufactured by Stanley Works.
This finger rest knob on the Block plane can be held in the palm of the hand while the tip of the worker's index finger lies in the groove on top of the plane. As you can see, the style, which has been around close to 100 years, allows it to still be fully functional and easily maneuvered. It has no rust or corrosion with just light wear from age, use, and storage (see photos). The plane would clean up fine for a display item or make a great gift for a dcor piece.
