PetMeds Graciously Supports Our Cause
Sheltie-girl loves to play catch and be your constant companion. Suffers from allergies that are under control, but needs a family that will help her.
We don't know as much as we'd like to about Honey because she was brought to a local shelter, who then contacted Sheltie Rescue, to help her. The shelter explained that Honey was known to have allergies and that she had a small tumor near her anal opening. The shelter wasn't going to adopt her out with these potential medical issues. Sheltie Rescue took Honey to a specialty dermatology clinic in Salt Lake City. After examining her and verifying that she is a dog with allergies, they had me start her on some antibiotics and on a rabbit and potato diet. The diet is helping her but hasn't cleared up her allergies completely. We also brought Honey to Cottonwood Animal Hospital for a regular exam and we had the small tumor biopsied. We would have had it removed but removal was actually potentially dangerous because it could have severed nerves that help Honey maintain control over her bowels. We didn't want to turn Honey into an incontinent Sheltie-girl. She is very, very good about her house training. If she had accidents it would make her very unhappy. Honey very much wants to be a good girl. The biopsy of the tumor was that it was non-cancerous and didn't pose a threat. Hopefully it'll stay tiny and never become an issue. It hasn't changed at all in the months Honey has been with us. I don't know if it's the allergies that still bother her or her age or past history but if you reach down to move Honey by her collar she could turn to bite because she's clearly afraid that you're going to hurt her. If you try to clean her ears and you don't do it gently, she will try to bite. She will also growl and let you know that she doesn't want to be disturbed if you're trying to get her to move. 99% of the time Honey is very well behaved, loving, and sweet. But she does have her grouchy moments and they're easily predicted. As such, she needs an understanding companion who will love her for who she is.
