Shadow is about 17 months old, and he is an Akita and Formosan Mountain Dog Mix from the country of Taiwan.
He weighs 44 pounds (as of 4/1/2018) and is fully grown.
Shadows rescued story:
Shadows rescuer is a television director in Taiwan.
In last summer, she and her team workers were shooting a scene in north Taiwan and walked by a farmers house and spotted Shadow being tied with a thick metal wire in the front courtyard; he did not bark but wagged his tail from the distance as soon as he saw them.
At age 4-month-old, Shadow was adopted by the farmer and his family from a local government-run animal shelter to be used as a guard dog to watch the farm; however, the farmer said that months has passed, Shadow was still very quiet and too friendly toward strangers, and they were planning to return Shadow to the shelter the following day.
Shadow was never being treated properly by the farmer; he had been fed with the familys left-over food mixing with some chicken bones, and he was very thin.
He had started to lose hairs and had skin infection from eating too much human food.
The rescuer realized that as Shadows health condition at that time, he would be put down immediately once being brought to the shelter, so she had decided to rescue Shadow.
Shadows completed medical information:
After receiving a full check up from a vet including X-rays on hips; Shadows hips are in good condition, but he had anemia from malnutrition.
After months of great caring, Shadow has gained stronger and his hair has grown healthy.
He has passed the following medical tests:
Distemper test, 4 Idexx (Heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma Phagocytophilum), CBC, Biochemistry blood work, and a PCR test for diseases and infections transmitted by fleas or ticks.
He will have teeth cleaned before coming to the US for adoption.
Shadow is neutered, de-wormed, up to date on all vaccinations including rabies shot.
He is heartworm negative and on preventative treatment and is micro chipped.
All of Shadow's medical documents including the X-ray films on his hips will be given to his adopter when he is adopted.
Shadows temperaments and personality:
Since Shadow has been rescued, he has been living with his rescuer and the rescuers adult daughter along with their several senior rescued dogs and a rescued young cat Professor together.
Shadow gets along very well with all of them; he respects his senior roommates and has never bullied them.
Shadows best friend is Professor; every day they have spent a lot of time wrestling, chasing each other or playing Hide and Seek.
Professor has grown up with large dogs around since he was rescued from the streets at age two months old; he acts like a dog than a cat.
He would sniff new coming dogs like other dogs do.
Shadow is very active but not hyper; he still needs daily exercise to burn out his young dogs energy.
Except for playing with Professor, Shadow loves to run and play with other dogs at the park.
His rescuer often takes him to a local park and let him run off leash.
Sometimes, the rescuer takes Shadow for business trips in the farm; one time they went to a sesame harvesting, Shadow was running happily in the sesame field.
His rescuer said that Shadow listens and does not start any trouble either and he always comes back as soon as being called.
Shadow is an excellent jumper, a baby gate with regular height cannot be an obstacle for him and he would jump over it easily; therefore, a fully enclosed yard with a 5-foot height fence or ever higher is very important for Shadow.
Shadow rarely barks so that he will be fine with living in an apartment but needs to exercise in a fully enclosed dog park with a high fence every day.
Shadow will be wonderful for moderately-highly active family that loves outdoors activities, and he is also a great companion for jogging, running or hiking.
Shadow is sweet and has great temperaments with people and children, but he is shy and a little nervous with strangers and being in a new environment at the beginning, but he would warm up faster after eating some treats.
Shadow is very affectionate and likes to snuggle with his rescuer.
The rescuer said that every time when she was doing yoga on the floor, Shadow always comes to lie on her yoga mat or put his head on her feet so that she cannot continue and must finish doing yoga quickly to pay attention to him.
Shadow has been living with dogs and cat together since being rescued so we cannot tell how he will act if he were to leave alone.
We only can ensure that he has not shown any separation anxiety when his rescuer out for work and left him with other dogs at home.
Shadow is neither food nor toy aggression or possession toward people.
He does not like other dogs put their heads into his food while he is eating his favorite treats; he would growl as a warning but never bit.
Shadow needs daily physical exercise and mental stimulation and should not be kept at home for long hours every day.
We are hoping that Shadows new family would take him for outings, one-day trips or vacations except for taking him for neighborhood walks or playing in the backyard.
We really hope that Shadow can have the opportunities to experience different parts of his life that he had missed before.
Shadow is housebroken, great in car rides and walks very well on the leash.
How to meet Shadow?
Shadow is currently in Taiwan and will be scheduled to the US once we have found a promised family for him.
He will be staying with our foster family in North Wilmington in Delaware after his arrival.
If you are seriously thinking of giving Shadow a loving permanent home, please email us for an application.
Because we do not have a shelter to show people our dogs and all our rescues are living with our foster family, we do not accept stop-by visits if you are interested in seeing Shadow.
Before meeting Shadow, the prospective adopter needs to fill out the application and gets approved.
