　　Rolex's Submariner cannot be underestimated in its impact on the watch world. The Submariner is known for being tough, water-tight, and sophisticated in its sporty good looks. Its design has been copied by other watch companies and launched an entire market segment. Since its launch in 1954, the Sub has become a true classic, and one of the most recognized and coveted luxury items in the world.

　　Since the 1954 launch, the Submariner has been continually improved and tweaked. The date was added, as was the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The guards around the crown were added early on, and made bigger and more protective. The dial has become more and more readable, and the bezel larger and more durable. The bracelet has been improved from folded steel to machined links. The clasp has gotten better and better.

　　The Submariner invented and defined the "Dive Watch" segment. The luminous dial markers hands tell you not only the time, but by being able to see the seconds hand's marker moving, you know your watch hasn't stopped. The bezel only turns one way: this allows you to dial in the time your dive starts, and you will know exactly when you need to come up to the surface. However, since it only turns one direction, if the bezel were accidentally bumped, you would come up sooner rather than later. Even the layout of the bezel's markings are now codified as the way a dive watch has to mark the time on the bezel. The bracelet and clasp are very secure, to make sure you don't lose your timing device mid-dive.

　　Most of these watches get used as more of a so-called "desk diver," though. Divers today usually use a dive computer to time their dives, but It's nice to know the Rolex could do the job if it needed to. Instead, the durability and features all add up to mean that the Submariner is ready for any and every situation you might find yourself, which is no doubt why James Bond wore this model in 11 of the 007 movies.
