Description

  Retriever - Abby - Medium - Senior - Female - Dog

ABBY is a young-at-heart senior girl! She is a Retriever mix and will be turning 11 years old in December. ABBY deserves a forever-retirement home! She is currently 48 pounds, though she could stand to lose a pound or two! ABBY was dumped at a local animal shelter by her owners when they decided that they just didn't want to deal with her any more. Some detective-work revealed that in her previous home ABBY was always an outside dog (which was surprising, since she hasn't had accidents in the house at her foster home). Her previous owners said that ABBY was struck by lightning years ago, and since then she cannot stand to be outside alone during a thunderstorm - she will dig out of a fence if left outside in a storm. Though they knew this, her previous owners never tried to bring ABBY inside the house; because she kept digging out, they decided it would be better to turn her over to a shelter (knowing that euthanasia was a strong possibility) instead of trying to turn her into an inside-dog. In her foster home, however, ABBY is an inside dog, and doesn't seem too bothered by storms - she likes to be close to you if it's thundering and lightning, but she is not destructive or obnoxious and does not need any medications or sedatives during storms; a reassuring pat every once in a while will suffice. ABBY gets along well with other dogs, and seems to be just fine with cats. When She sees cats on our walks and when coming face-to-face with the neighbor's cat, all she does is sniff and then keeps walking. ABBY has never shown any sign of aggression towards people or other animals over anything. You can take a chew-toy right out of her mouth, and she doesn't care if the other dogs or people are around her when she eats or when she's playing with toys. ABBY is still a pretty spry old lady! She is in good health and does not having any major medical issues. She loves to go on walks, and walks well on a leash. She also LOVES car rides and LOVES mealtimes! Aside from rawhides, ABBY has not chewed on anything. She is crate-trained and doggy door trained, both of which she learned after just a few repetitions. ABBY loves people and attention but is also content lay down by herself or finds a toy and will entertain herself. ABBY does not bark much; when she does, all you have to do is say her name and she will stop. The most noise ABBY makes is when she's sleeping - she can be a snore-er! And it is adorable! ABBY is looking for a nice place to live out the rest of her life. Please don't let her age be a deterrent to any potential adopter - ABBY still has lots of life left and lots of love to give! ABBY is spayed, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, and is on flea and heartworm prevention. She is has also had recent blood work.
