What a remarkable treasure written by Mark Twain, America's most beloved author. A collection of short stories, 18 in all. This is a small book -- 4 3/4 " X 6 3/4" a little larger than miniature. The decorative cover of an elephant highlighted with gold gilt, the front is in good condition; the spine is very faded and the ends of the spine are badly frayed, a little glue would help; cover has a lot of splotches on it but still quite interesting on the shelf. The front hinge is starting to crack, there is a label pasted inside the front cover "From the Library of Albert B. Faust" who may be the author of "The German Element in the United States" -- not sure. A few pencil notes on the first blank page and the remainder of the pages are in very good condition, just slightly yellowed. James R. Osgood & Co. catalog is in back of book. A wonderful read!
NOTE: This is the first AMERICAN edition; there was a London edition printed shortly before this one. The first printing of the American edition was a few months earlier than this book, dated 1882 on the title page, same as copyright. This book is dated 1883 on the title page, and in the back the publisher catalog is dated March 1883, which I understand also dates the printing of this book.
