Description

  My story

03/01/22 Rafael returned to the shelter after his stay with a foster home where he was able to run with a musher and learn more about being a sled dog! According to Rafael's foster home, he did very well, but was nervous about his first time in the harness. He was a bit defensive and growly being so close to the new dogs. But once everyone started running, he picked his ears and tail up and joined in on the fun, pulling forward in his harness along with the rest of the dogs. Rafael did not have as many opportunities to run as his foster had hoped due to too many moose encounters making mushing unsafe. But the runs that he did go on went very well, he just needs more experience and time in the harness. Rafael was said to do well with the other dogs and was even quite playful. He also did well with the smaller dog in the home. The foster did state that Rafael is not housebroken, but he did not intentionally mark in the house either, the foster felt he would be an easy dog to house train based on what they had experienced. Rafael does have a high metabolism and requires a high-quality diet to maintain proper weight and help keep him in shape. The foster also stated that Rafael did well having his paws handled and touched, he also tolerated nail trims just fine. Based on the information the shelter has gathered over 4 months it is safe to say that Rafael still enjoys running in the harness, but he is not an experienced dog and just need time and patience. He may be an excellent addition to a recreational team or a skijor companion. Rafael is also very sweet and personable, he could be an excellent family companion, but will need work on house training and manners as well as an owner that understands the exercise requirements of owning an Alaskan Husky. Rafael’s foster described him as being super affectionate with people and whoever adopts him will be a lucky person! If Rafael sounds like the dog for you, please give the shelter a call to make an appointment to meet him.10/07/21 Rafael is a sweet, shy, but friendly guy who is looking for a new home. He came in as an owner surrender with Ramona because they were not wanting to be sled dogs. His previous owner said he would do better as a pet dog instead of a mushing dog. This little guy was so friendly to his animal tenders and he is eager to learn some basic commands. He is not yet housebroken as he has spent his time outdoors and will need a full introduction into becoming a indoor/outdoor pet dog. Rafael is described as being gentle when playing and friendly. We do not know how he would do with other animals as the previous owner did not indicate that on the paperwork. He has been friendly towrds the dogs at the shelter and with Ramona. If you are looking to train a young guy into being a wonderful family member, then please give the shelter a call!
