Penelope's story
Penelope was surrendered to the shelter by her owner along with her companion, Charlene, with whom she is very tightly bonded. Penelope and Charlene are terrier mixes, and are fully mature. Both of these girls are absolutely terrified in the shelter, but the owner says they are both very sweet. They cower and try to keep as much distance as possible between them and anyone who approaches them, but they don't appear aggressive as a result of their fear, and when approached cautiously and patiently they will hesitantly submit to being petted. I spent a bit of time with them and was eventually able to pet them. I didn't see any sign of aggression during the time I was with them, but they do need to be approached and cared for very carefully and with patience and understanding, until they adjust to new surroundings. It has to have been very traumatic for them to have been given up by the only family they have ever known. These two girls each have a lot of potential to become loving and loyal pets and companions if they are given the opportunity to overcome their fears. There are precious, sweet, loving souls hiding beneath the fearful appearance and temporary scared behavior of these little girls.
