Maltese - Max - Small - Senior - Male - Dog

　　Max is a petite Maltese, about 12 years old though his true age is unknown as he lived on the streets with a homeless person and was surrendered to a shelter. At first the shelter volunteers thought Max was just an old senior, but his one eye, bulging twice the size of the other eye did not equate with advanced age. American Maltese Association took Max to an eye specialist who diagnosed Max with advanced glaucoma. Max was completely blind and had fooled everyone. The only way to give Max relief from the terrible pressure pain of glaucoma was to remove both diseased eyes.

　　Max had his eye surgery in December. Both eyes were removed and prosthetic implants placed behind his corneas. He bounced back from the surgery but had a setback when a staph infection destroyed one of the corneas and so that eye was stitched closed. Max was extremely lucky that the other cornea was spared and so he got to keep the appearance of having one eye - a prosthetic eye that opens and closes and follows the sound of his people. He can even produce tears!

　　Considering Max's tiny size he has recovered with vigor. Max?s favorite time of the day is meal time. He has just a few teeth, but he eats a regular diet of homemade food and Ziwi Peak venison jerky. Max is housetrained - remarkable! He goes potty outside and not on pads - he likes grass. He loves to make his way around his foster home going from one side of the house to the other and trying out all the beds. Max loves a cuddle and also likes his own space. He walks on a leash and loves to go around the neighborhood - slowly but steadily. People need to be told that Max is blind because he seems so confident - and he is.

　　Max is special needs but he doesn't need your pity. Max wants a quiet home with a family member home with him most of the time. This loving, little companion dog would like to go on walks and family outings. Max is a truly remarkable little dog who now weighs a healthy five pounds and is truly ready to find his forever family.
