Maddie (5 yr) - Australian Shepherd (possible mix) Maddie (adopted name we gave her so she doesn't know it yet) is a very pretty girl with tons of love to give. She loves humans very much and wants to greet them with lots of affection and kisses. She loves belly rubs and going for rides in the truck too! She sleeps in her kennel at night and although she cries out for a few minutes initially, she calms right down and doesn't make a peep all night. She has learned that a kennel is a safe place and her den. As far as we know, she didn't have any training but knows how to sit. She has learned how to stay in only two days, and is a very quick learner and eager to please. We will continue to work with her until she gets to her forever home. She gets along with our two cats, and has been exposed to our horses and chickens.
Maddie is somewhat dominant around other dogs and has issues with needing 'all the love'. She is a bit insecure and on the anxious side but with plenty of love, reassurance and structure, she would do well. She is not good with other dominant females or males. She might do 'ok' with a submissive male (she's ok with our male - they play together) but because of her insecurities would probably do best as an only dog where she gets all the attention.
Maddie was a rescue dog that came to IMHS from a shelter in Aztech, New Mexico. What we know is she was there for 4 months and was put on the euthanasia list. IMHS had her brought to Colorado. She was only at IMHS two nights when we took her home for a weekend trial. Things seemed to go well and so we adopted her into our home with two existing dogs: a female aussie and submissive male aussie.
After about a week, the two females have decided they truly don't care for each other and there has been discontent and several girl fights. We've consulted with professionals and it was recommended to get her checked medically. Often behavior is a result of a medical condition so we wanted to rule that out. Everything came back great except for a low thyroid so we're starting her on siloxine (thyroid med) today (3/24/18).
We have had aussies most of our adult life but never two alpha female aussies and have quickly learned it's not a good recipe. We have become pretty attached to her quickly as she has to us. As difficult as it is, we want to give her the best chance at happiness and find a more fitting home where she can feel secure as the only dog or one with a submissive male dog. If you think you would like to bring this sweet girl into your forever home and give her the love she so deserves, you will be rewarded by all the love she has to give (which is a ton).
