Labrador Retriever - Checkers - Large - Adult - Male - Dog

　　CHECKERS: 5 yr old neutered blk Lab/Sheppard mix 114 lbs

　　Checker?s owner has found him to be just too much dog for her to handle and has asked GGLRR to find him a new forever home. She rescued Checkers from the Ukiah Humane Society 4 ½ years ago. She loves him dearly, but knows there is family that can give him the exercise he so deserves and needs.

　　Checkers is a very gregarious happy dog; he is very friendly and enjoys being with people. He thinks everyone that comes to the house is there to play with him. He does run for the door and barks when someone rings the door bell. This of course is a trainable behavior that can be changed with correction and consistency, the pattern needs to be changed. When I met with Checkers he did run for the door, I waited as the owner put him in his kennel before I entered. He then was allowed out of the kennel and was then ready to play. He does not jump on you to greet. He loves to play fetch with his tennis ball, and will bring it back placing it nicely in your hand. Sometimes he will drop it a little bit away from you, but he will bring it to you when you ask.

　　Checkers lives with another dog and cat, so he is fine with them. When I walked him on leash and dogs were barking from behind fences he showed no interest. Checker?s owner has a dog walker that takes him out for walks about 3 times a week and he does well. His owner has even said that when he is with the dog walker for walks or even staying at her home, he does not bark and obeys her commands. He knows sit, stay, down and no. Checkers is house trained, loves his crate to lounge and relax in. When he needs to go out he rings a bell that is placed by the door. Checkers is fine with children, when the owner?s 4 yr old grandson came over, he settled right down, and was wonderful with him. Since he is a big guy and doesn?t really know his size, he will need to go to a home with older children, in that he may knock small ones down. Checkers shows no possessiveness with toys or food, he takes treats very gently. He does beg at the table for people food, but simply separate him out at this time will be all he needs to correct this behavior.

　　Checkers does need to lose a few pounds, a little less food and good walks and swimming; which he loves will be all he needs to shed the extra weight. Don?t be fooled by this guy, he has been known to sneak the lid off the food barrel and help himself. Checkers is fine being left alone for part of the day; he is used to being in the house when alone with no problems.

　　We would like to see Checkers go to home that can work with him and give him the exercise that he needs, he is really a nice guy!

　　He is neutered, up to date on his shots, micro chipped and heart worm negative.
