Kalulah's story
Meet Kalulah! She is a yellow female who has had a difficult life, but she has survived and doesn't realize how old she is as life is just starting for her. When Kalulah first came to our home as a foster dog, she was only 38 pounds and her whole body was covered in sores. This sweet 10 year old girl had been used as a puppy factory, living her whole life outside in the hot sun and endless heat, alone. After she developed skin issues and lost her usefulness, she was abandoned by her family at an animal shelter. That's when DLRR stepped in to save her. Tests revealed she suffered from a disease called pemphigus foliaceus, which causes blisters to form on otherwise healthy skin. Thankfully, the condition can be treated and controlled. She was put on oral medication, special food, and I began to wash her daily with a medical shampoo. I had to be very gentle due to all her sores, but she never complained. Today, Kalulah is slowly gaining weight and up to 44 pounds. Her skin is clear and beautiful. She cuddles with the other dogs in my home and loves being with my family. But her life in a puppy factory still affects her. She doesn't bark or make any vocal sounds. She doesn't roll in the grass, run after a ball, or know how to play with other dogs. She stands or lies down, but she won't sit. Yet she is as kind as the day is long, and gently wags her tail when approached. I hope Kalulah will someday have all her wishes come true. I hope she might even learn how to chase a ball or have a good romp in the grass. We're working on it together.
