64 River Ave was the Summer home of renowned Philadelphia Architect Richard Martin. The house is architecturally distinguished in a French Provincial Style, with Western Red Cedar shingles, a steep, high standing-seam hipped roof, massive symmetrical chimneys, and second-story windows with curved heads that break through the cornices. The interior opens to high ceilings with multiple layers of exposed Douglas Fir beams and columns, solid wide-planked cherry floors, enormous windows with interior shutters, two fireplaces, and a monumental wall of retractable interior glass doors that opens onto one of two living rooms with extensive views of Toms River. The front entrance faces the interior courtyard with stone walls, gazebo, swimming pool, pool house, and a guest house.
The guest house at 14 Oak Ave, also designed by Richard Martin, faces into the interior courtyard of the house at 64 River Avenue. This Salt Box Studio, over a garage, has a double-story volume with exposed Douglas Fir beams, Douglas fir flooring, Western Red Cedar siding, and two wood-burning fireplaces. Four pairs of French doors let the outdoors in and offer access to two porches with spectacular river views.
