  Hoss's story

"With a little time, patience, and love, I'll be back on my feet in no time at all!"

Hoss is a black and tan spitfire of a dachshund that has really had it rough. He was rescued from a very abusive situation, the final incident causing severe damage to his back and hind legs to the point he was no longer able to walk on them. Our Hoss is a fighter though, and he never lets anything dim his spirit. Upon seeing his desire to not just walk but run, we got in contact with Gunnar's Wheels, a wonderful nonprofit organization that provides doggie wheelchairs to disabled rescue dogs for the duration they need them. As soon as he was strapped in to his new wheelchair for the first time, he was racing around the floor! We began noticing after a few weeks, though, that Hoss would twitch his tail, or try to stretch one of his back legs. He still had some feeling in them, and they were getting stronger! We focused more effort on getting him to stand on all four feet at first, then guide him to take a couple steps at a time until he could take several on his own. He still has a long way to go before he'll be able to walk consistently, and he will mostly likely always have a little wobble in his back end, but we are hopeful he will be able to make a full recovery!

Hoss's adoption fee of $200 covers his neuter, DAPP and Bordetella vaccines, Rabies vaccine, PetLink Microchip with lifetime membership, heartworm test, deworming treatments, and some physical therapy. Hoss is very affectionate and loves to climb into laps and give kisses, even whining with joy when his favorite people spend time with him. He loves to play with balls and chew bones. He will come with his wheelchair to help his new family in the process of getting him mobile again. Other than recovering from his nerve damage, Hoss is in perfect health. He does respond well to guidance from a leash; however, his injuries have left him with incontinence issues, so it will take some work for him to heal and then become potty trained. He has been socialized with other dogs and has done great in a daycare setting. However, he has a pretty strong prey drive towards cats, so he will need a home without them. Hoss's heart is so much bigger than his broken body, and he would make an amazing family companion no matter his walking ability. Adult applicants and households with children ages 8 and above are encouraged to apply.

Unless otherwise noted, all pets adopted with our organization are spayed/neutered, fully-vaccinated, and microchipped. They are placed in wonderful foster homes (as available) while searching for their forever families. If no foster home is available, they are graciously housed and socialized at Phenom-A-Dog Daycare Boarding & Training in Rogers, Arkansas. The first step toward adoption is to fill out an application on our website, fighting4fido.org/adopt. Adoptions are decided by our board of directors based on the best interest of each pet, rather than on a first-come-first-served basis. Please email us at fighting4fido@gmail.com with any questions you may have.
