My story
Herbie the Love Bug may be tiny, but he has a lot of love to give. He is a 5 year old Dachshund / Cairn Terrier mix, with a scruffy caramel coat and soulful brown eyes. He was surrendered to the county shelter when his owner grew ill and was unable to care for him any more. You can tell he was from a loving home by how eager he is for a lap to sleep on or for a friend to give him belly rubs. His favorite thing in the world is to snuggle up next to his person for some quality indoor time, although he wouldn't pass up a chance to play tug of war or entertain you with stuffed toy shenanigans. He is very eager to please his person, though he also does well sleeping on his own beside the bed at night. Herbie becomes extremely timid and tries to hide when on a leash, so a home with a fenced in outdoor area would be ideal for some fresh air and potty breaks. He is house trained, and knows several commands. Herbie is working becoming bi-lingual; he knows Spanish and is quickly picking up English commands as well! Like many small dogs, Herbie can be a little growly when he is uncertain. New people sometimes make him want to either cower in the corner or growl and protect his person. In his ideal home, his family would understand it is important to let Herbie approach new people on his own time (and then be prepared for non-stop love and companionship when he warms up!). Speaking of his forever home - Herbie would do best in a home with another confident dog to show him not to be afraid. He is also excellent with his foster mom's cat, but he needs to be in a home without small children. A loving owner willing to help Herbie overcome his fear would be a big win for this little guy. He has a heart of gold, even if he is a little scruffy around the edges. If you're interested in adopting Herbie, please fill out an adoption application here: https://underdogsrescue.org/adopt-form/Underdogs is a small volunteer-based animal rescue and we unfortunately do not have the resources to respond to phone and email inquires about our adoptable animals at this time.
