Hazelnut's story
Hazelnut was brought in to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona originally on 12/11/17 as a stray. After her stray hold was up she was soon adopted into a wonderful home. Shortly after Hazelnut was adopted her owner noticed some behavior issues that were not seen in her original stay at the Humane Society.
On August 8th Hazelnuts owner made the hard decision to return Hazelnut for a variety of reasons, the main being leash reactivity. Leash reactivity is caused by a variety of things, the main two being, fear related or over excitement to get to the object (dog/car/person etc).
Hazelnut is able to be around dogs off leash, she does have some severe reactivity issues when she sees other dogs. The department of corrections has been working with Hazelnut through a program called New Beginnings Canine.
In this program two department of corrections inmates worked with her on her leash reactivity towards people, cars and dogs. Hazelnut has calmed down on leash around dogs but does have some days when she seems to be more reactive. Hazelnut knows many basic obedience commands and is very food motivated so it is easy to redirect her attention when she is getting overstimulated by the other dogs.
Hazelnut will do best in a home with older children (13yrs+) no cats, and a mandatory dog introduction (no small dogs). The adopters should take Hazelnut to further training to help work with her reactivity in a more suitable environment. Hazelnut has come very far from where she was when she was first brought to us but she will need a consistent home and a less stimulating environment to continue to work her through these issues.
Hazelnut is NOT a dog that will do well at dog parks, for further socialization please speak with a trainer about doggie socialization options.
