Greyhound - Spirit - Medium - Adult - Female - Dog

　　Spirit is a petite, 4 year old black girl, who is a little shy, but is coming around. Spirit had a mderatley long race career. Her small animal status is unknown. FOSTER UPDATE: When SAGreys retrieved Spirit from the track, she was nervous of her own shadow, let alone being handled by people. Greyhounds are sensitive dogs, some more than others. Spirit has now been in foster care for over one week. Already, she is opening up like a rose petal in spring under the loving care of Dawn, her foster mom, and learning to trust that people will not hurt her. Spirit is learning that people can be good, and hands can be for petting. She loves soft beds, quiet rooms, and being outside on the patio bed. It didn?t take Spirit long to figure out what to do with squeaky toys, including transporting them from inside to outside the home. Dawn has experienced no accidents or chewing in the home, so there?s no need for crating. However, once Spirit learned to navigate the doggie door, and demonstrated her newly found skill to her foster mom by zipping in and out and in and out, she also thought it a good idea to move the duvet from the bed, through the doggie door, onto the patio. Mm, not such a good decision and foster mom firmly told Spirit ?NO.? The duvet has forever after remained on the bed. Although initially shy around strangers, regardless of gender or age, she warms up as long as the visitors don?t move too quickly. Spirit has not been around children, but her foster mom cautions that very young children may frighten Spirit with their enthusiasm. Spirit can be left alone without any problem, but she has two other greyhounds to keep her company, which usually averts symptoms of separation anxiety. Loud or unusual noises used to frazzle Spirit, but she?s gradually acclimating to the many noises in this crazy world: police sirens, huge trucks rumbling down the road, emergency vehicle sirens, squealing brakes ? you get the drift. She loves to ride in the car, go for walks, is good on the leash, and barks moderately - she seems to have watchdog tendencies: this is a plus. Potential burglars don?t want to mess with a home that has a barking dog. Spirit is healthy, has no problems with any types of food, although she does need to gain a few pounds, but this will come over time. She tolerates grooming quite well. Dawn is not sure how Spirit would do with cats, but believes that this greyhound would do best with other dogs if the adopter were working full time outside the home.
