I've regretfully chosen to part methods with my LCM Eagle # 17. This is a personalized acoustic archtop guitar developed right here in Colorado by Jerry Barker of Berthoud. Jerry has studied with distinguished luthier Dale Unger of American Archtops. I got to satisfy Jerry at the current Douglas County Guitar Show. He discussed the week-long process of applying several coats of the silver-tinted discolorations he used to highlight the sensational grain of the flamed maple. This is simply one example of the time, knowledge, and labor that enters into a personalized guitar. Jerry is a dedicated, talented artisan and this guitar is evidence of it!
On this instrument, there's no binding, elegant or purfling inlays - just adeptly carved spruce and beautiful flamed maple, with ebony tailpiece, bridge, fingerboard, headplate and tuner buttons. The shape of the body is less rounded than the common vintage archtop, makings it look more sleek and modern-day. Whether it's this shape, or Jerry's specialist sculpting and tap-tuning (or both), the guitar has a loud, dry, woody tone that's far more mature than you 'd get out of such a "young" instrument. I've played 1930's archtops that didn't sound this opened-up.
Custom-made, by hand, by a single master artisan. Mint condition - looks, plays and sounds great. It beats the trousers off of any of the Chinese imports! Includes a very strong, TDK jumbo archtop case that fits perfectly. Just try finding another luthier-built, one-of-a-kind American archtop for less than 2 grand! I dislike to part with it but can not keep two archtops, and I've chosen to keep my vintage Epiphone.
