My story

　　This is Ginger, her name matches her perfectly because she is a beautfiul Ginger color. Do not let her intimidate you or discourage you she is just trying to get to know you. Once you spend a couple minutes with her she is the most loving and friendly dog. Once she gets to know you she is very loyal and you will create a strong bond with her. She is on the larger side and for that reason we would not like her to go to a house with small children. She will need a home that can understand her personal space but knows exactly when she wants belly rubs. She has an amazing personailty that will shine through if you take her into our play room. Ginger is around 5 years old and is looking for another chance at a forever home. She has lots of energy and will climb in your lab as she wiggles. Her previous owners say that she is good with other dogs but a meet and greet is always encouraged to insure that she is a good match with your family. She isn't a fan of the vet and has anxiety about it but she will grow to learn that the vet is a good place that will keep her healthy. She is already spayed and up-to-date on all of her vaccines. 　　Meet our sweet 6 year old German Shepherd mixed breed Ginger. Ginger arrived at the shelter in 2015 as a stray from Georgetown Delaware. She was adopted in 2015 but later returned to the shelter due to her owner moving and unable to have pets where he was moving to. She came back in 2018 and has been with us ever since. Here is what we know about her. She loves the people that take care of her. She is comfortable with them. She can adjust quicker with female strangers vs male strangers even though it was a man who adopted her many years ago. Ginger is what is known as a resource guarder. Resource guarding refers to a dog displaying behavior such as growling, snapping, etc. This type of behavior is intended to convince other dogs or humans to stay away from a treasure or resource. The resource can be food, treats, toys, a place (crate), or occasionally even a person. What does all this mean? Simply put Ginger needs to get to know you first. This may take several visits for to even feel comfortable to come up to you and pet her. Even after that happens in a new home she would require the same amount of patience from her new family or potential home visitors. She would do best in a home as a single dog with older people. Small children are just not in the cards for Ginger. She is not deemed animal aggressive she just prefers not to have animals jumping on her. This pet has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated (age appropriate), microchipped, and tested for heartworm (age appropriate). They also receive monthly heartworm prevention and flea/tick while they stay with our shelter. If you are interested in seeing this pet please ask the front desk to call for a kennel tech.
