My story
01/22/22 15:41 Gibbs, formerly Cricket, was surrendered to the shelter by his most recent owners after he started peeing outside of the litterbox.
Gibbs had originally been surrendered to a local rescue for the same behavior, the rescue vetted him and determined there was no medical reason for the urinary indiscretion and adopted him out. Gibbs was sent to the vet while in our care and his blood work and urinalysis came back normal. Gibbs had a couple of accidents when he was first in his most recent home but he has done great for the last several months.
There have been no changes or new stressors in the household that the most recent family is aware of, and Gibbs does not seem to always pee outside of the litterbox, just sometimes, and upon further clarification it appears Gibbs doesn't pee in random locations in the home, just on the floor or wall near his litterbox.
It is possible that Gibbs may be a 'hoverer' with particularly bad aim, since it seems like he knows where his box is and is trying to use it.
The most recent owner had a large open box for Gibbs but he may simply need a covered litterbox or a high sided litterbox with a 'drip-tray' underneath to catch any oopsies. While at the shelter Gibbs has used his covered litterbox without incident. You may want to also try cat attract litter so that he knows where to go as well in his new home. It would also be beneficial for Gibbs to start out in a small room in his new house and gradually introduce his to more sections of the house as long as he is using his covered litterbox. Gibbs is reported to be a generally shy cat, and prefers the conversation of adult humans.
He is scared of dogs and does not like other cats, so we are requiring that he go to a home without dogs or cats. He may also prefer a home without small toddly humans under 5 years. Gibbs is a sweet and gentle young man who loves gentle affection. Gibbs' family was very attached to him but felt they had reached the end of their capacity to deal with his pee challenges.
If you feel like you can provide the right toilette for Mr. Gibbs, please contact the shelter today!
If you have any questions or would like to adopt GIBBS, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
