The fishing for large wild rainbows is still good to great and will remain that way until the harsh winter weather arrives. The lower section of the Sacramento River through Redding is in perfect condition! The large fish have followed the salmon upriver for their fall migration and have fed heavily on roe for the last few months. The salmon are all but gone and fish are still hungry and need lots of food to maintain their prodigious size (15 to 20 inches).
Fly fishing from a drift boat is the way to catch these big powerful beauties. I have been fishing these waters for over 30 years and I know where to go and what flies to use. Recently the flows have dropped (4000cfs) and the fish are being condensed into tighter slots and runs and will be competing for the available food. Advantage fisherman!
The pictures you see are typical of the fish we have been catching recently. Bring your 6 wt. rod, floating lines and some casting skill and get ready for a day of fun and adventure and a full day of fishing. Check out my web site () for pictures of happy anglers on the lower Sac and other northen California locations as well (Upper Sac and the Pit river are also fishing well).
I still have plenty of openings in January and February, and remember that these fish love cloudy cool drizzly/rainy days. Contact me directly for more info. We are expecting some light showers next week with daytime temps in the 50's and 60's. Check out my web site at for info and pics of happy anglers with their prizes. Contact me directly for more info and don't forget to ask about half day trips too.
