Stephen Dweck began his design education at the School of Visual Arts in New York City where he studied painting and sculpting. While studying at art school, Dweck's love for nature influenced his painting and sculpture but his study of sculptural form eventually evolved into jewelry, when he made bangles carved of natural stone as an art school project.
Dweck's love for the unusual combination of natural polished stones, semi precious stones, hand made silver clasps and beads were all carefully selected and artfully assembled as they became the foundations of his recognizable individual style. Dweck's designs were readily received and he became an instant success when in 1981 famed New York City retailer, Bergdoff Goodman, launched his first jewelry line. The design world also began to appreciate Stephen Dweck's artistry when Geoffrey Beane asked him to create a line of jewelry for his runway collection. Donna Karen, Oscar de Larente and Escada all sought Stephen Dweck's creativity to complement their clothing collections for runway and ready to wear collections.
Stephen Dweck uses his passion for stones and raw materials such as; tourmalines from Brazil, boulder opals from Australia, Ammonites from Morocco, naturally formed pearls found through out the world, to assemble his unique culmination of nature and wearable artistic design. The influence of natural environment upon his work is also revealed by his love for flowers and leaves, in his flora and fauna motifs which are cast in the finery of 18 karat gold with diamonds and sterling silver jewelry pieces. Stephen Dweck creates his wearable art pieces in his Brooklyn, New York, design studio.
As a true American designer, Stephen Dweck's jewelry art is celebrated and is on permanent display in the costume department of the Museum of Metropolitan Art in New York, the Smithsonian Institute's Fashion Archives in Washington D.C. as well as, a traveling exhibit entitled 'Modernism in American Silver' , which is housed at the Dallas Museum of Art.
In his Brooklyn studio his brothers Edmond and Gregory oversee the production, technology, marketing and public relations for the expanding artistic enterprise which includes, fine jewelry design in 18 karat gold and diamonds, fine china, silverware and home accents.
