My story
Drew is a young adult dog weighing about 35lbs, who came from a high kill shelter in South Texas. Drew's story is sadder than most, but we are determined that it will have the best ending ever. Drew was dumped at the shelter incredibly pregnant. It was such an overcrowded shelter that they stuck her in a kennel with 4 other dogs. Unfortunately the four other dogs attacked her, tearing apart her back legs. Our wonderful rescue partner immediately got Drew from the shelter and brought her to a vet. Since she was so stressed she gave birth pretty quickly to 5 puppies, 3 of which ended up surviving. They tried to treat all the puncture wounds and tears on Drew's back legs but in the end they ended up having to amputate part of both legs due to the infections. This story sucks and it's hard to read, but it's now been about 4-5 months and Drew is ready to find her own forever home. You would think after everything Drew has been though she would be emotionally and mentally "damaged" but she is not in the slightest. She absolutely loves everybody and everything. She is a true exactly of the unconditional love and trust dogs have for other living creatures. Drew does get around pretty well on her back nubs, but also has a wheelchair for walks and other outdoor activities. The vets did transplant a pad to the bottom of one of her back nubs so she can get around a little better without tearing the skin. She still goes back to Wheat Ridge every few months so they can check in on her, but she is doing great and has made pretty much a full recovery. While her new family will have to do very little in terms of vet visits or follow up care, we want everybody to understand she is a special needs dog and will take a little more work and care than just sticking her in a wheel chair and calling it a day. Many people love the idea of helping a special needs done, and that is absolutely wonderful, but there is work and care that comes with it and we just need to make sure her forever family is ready for that.Drew loves to play with other dogs, go for walks. snuggle, and goof around in the home. She does believe she is a lap dog so her forever family will have to be okay with lots of snuggles and affection. She would love another buddy to play with but that is not an absolute must as long as she gets a lot of love and attention. If you are interested in adopting Drew, please fill out our application at brighterdaysdogrescue.comAfter we get your application we will be more than happy to answer any and all questions you may have about her care, personality, etc.
