UPDATE Jan 2016: Dooby has grown up to be a strapping young man pigeon and he has married Newark, another beautiful King Pigeon. Dooby loves to show off for her and they are a very romantic couple
Dooby (the dyed green one on the right) was found on 9/21 as a skinny, hungry, helpless baby left outside a mausoleum in San Leandro. Bred to meat (squab), he is a King Pigeon who was bought from a live poultry market and most likely "released" at the mausoleum in order to honor someone who died. But releasing a helpless domestic pigeon like a baby King Pigeon is terribly cruel. They have no ability to survive in the wild. Who knows- Dooby may have been one of many that were released. He's the only that was rescued, though. He was too young to self-feed and was a skinny, sad baby until we paired him with Whimsy who he loves! She was also rescued (one of two found in a park in Oakland but the other died overnight) and needed a friend. Now they ae inseperable. We call them childhood sweethearts. They are doing great, healing and growing and recovering from the trauma. (Dooby has nearly double his weight in just 2 weeks!) Please- spread the word- don't release domestic birds! It's never a good idea. (You can read more here- /faqs-2/why-dove-releases-are-cruel/)Please apply to adopt /birds/apply-to-foster-or-adopt/
