　　The Humane Society of West Alabama's cat adoption center at 1515 Veterans Memorial Pkwy is open Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Appointments are available for other times with advance notice. We're all-volunteer and need at least a couple of days of advance notice to schedule appointments.

　　This beautiful, lucky girl is Abigail, a (usually) long-haired Brown Tabby. She's a female adult between 3 and 5 years of age. We pulled Abigail from our city shelter after they shared her story and knew she needed a better chance for recovery in a different environment. Poor Abigail was brought to them in pretty bad shape. She hadn't been eating anything healthy for her, had been exposed to the elements outdoors and became severely (and painfully) matted by neglect. She didn't have any other options for grooming due to such severe matting - it was damaged beyond repair, with dirt and debris fused into her. To stop the painful pulling of the mats and to treat/protect her skin (which will become damaged/infected by matted fur), her best option was to be completely shaved. Mats form by natural friction with the outer fur layer and the soft, sensitive undercoat, along with dirt and anything else that might get stuck - leaves, twigs, bugs, etc. Even small mats can cause skin infections, skin lesions and will collect parasites. All mats will irritate and pull on the skin every time the cats move, causing pain and discomfort. Without proper grooming and by being exposed to the outdoors, it's unavoidable for cats. As severe as Abigail's condition was, she must've been in a lot of pain.

　　Abigail's fur has grown back very well. She's gorgeous! She's a very gentle girl, but a little independent.She does well with other cats, but would also be just as happy as an only pet. She's relaxed and feels safe in her new friendly environment. She's very happy with all the attention!! Please stop in to meet her!

　　Our flat adoption fee is $75, a fee to help defray a fraction of veterinary costs and general care expenses. Our adoptable animals have routine vet visits, and are as healthy as possible as soon as they are in our care. Vet records are provided to adopters. Read the descriptions thoroughly and note the specific personalities or special criteria we recommend (some are not good around kids, other cats, dogs, etc.).
