Bonnie: 13-year-old female chocolate Lab, 49 lbs, spayed
Background: After 13 years, Bonnies family moved and could not take her with them, so they took her to the shelter. That was Bonnies lucky day, as she quickly became a favorite of the shelter staff, who contacted Lab Rescue to see if we could help her.
Bonnie was never in the house, never house trained, spending all of her days in the yard with a couple of other dogs. Her favorite thing was playing with the other dogs, and playing with the children, who ranged in age from 3 years old to 17 years old. Her former owner said she loved to play fetch, and is a caring and calm dog that loves kids. You would never know from looking at Bonnie that shes 13 years young; she has a great coat, lots of energy and in great shape.
What Bonnies foster says: Bonnie is a sweetheart and gets along great with my 2 dogs and for being an outdoor dog, she has taken instantly to bring an indoor dog (who can blame her)! She wasnt too sure about the crate at first and barked for the first 20 minutes and then settled down.
She has been totally fine with house-training. I let her out frequently and she hasnt had any accidents. She is learning to use the dog door (she gets going out of the dog door to get outside but hasnt figured out that she can consistently get back in unless my dog goes thru first or I am on the inside encouraging her thru it). She has great energy. She doesnt seem to be interested in the ball or Frisbee at all and does pretty well on the leash. She takes toys from the toy basket and tries to hide them (was hiding them in her crate).
What Bonnies Rescue Rep says: Bonnie is one special girl! Shes a wee bonnie lass, the perfect size, just a shade under 50 pounds. She is quickly learning the ropes with the help of her 2 foster canines, sleeping in her crate at night, learning to potty outside. Shes a friendly girl, takes treats gently, and has no issues sharing food or toys.
Wed like Bonnie to go to a home with an experienced adopter who can do some training with her. We think shell learn quickly, and it will be a fun experience for both human(s) and dog! Bonnies new family should be able to provide her with regular exercise (daily walks and games of fetch) to ensure that she keeps her slim trim figure. Bonnie would love a place where her humans are around a good part of they day so she can hang out with them and they can continue her training. Her size makes her easy to handle and a family with dog savvy kids (or grandkids) would be fine. We dont know how she would be around cats.
Medical information: Bonnie is spayed, up to date on her shots, heartworm tested and on preventive. We had blood work done on her and it all came back fine for her age, although slightly anemic, which is not concerning, just something to keep an eye on in her annual checkups. She had a mass removed on her chest by the previous owner with no complications, but we have no indication of what the mass was.
Bonnie is located in: San Jose

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
