Bear's story
Introducing Bear! Bear comes from a life chained outside but craving human affection. With his foster family for the past five months Bear has acclimated well to home life. Dont let his grey muzzle fool you, Bear is quite active and agile. Bear plays great with his younger, very active doggie foster sister. Yet he is very happy to spend the day snuggling on the couch, chewing bones or meandering around the yard. Bear is crate trained and house broken.
Bear is a large dog and needs a family who can handle his strength and size. Bear does best in a fenced in yard. While Bear loves walks he can be reactive to other dogs while on leash and pull with significant force. We currently walk him using a gentle leader and use lots of treats to distract him if another dog walks by. Off leash in a controlled environment Bear has played well with all the other dogs he been introduced to.
When taken in Bear had undiagnosed IBD ( inflammatory bowel disease) and chronic ear infections. After hospitalization and an abdominal ultrasound Bear was diagnosed and treatment started. With diet change and medications he has gained 20 lbs! Maybe 5 lbs too much! No longer are medications needed, his tummy issues are managed with a diet and gentle snacker treats. While his ears will never clear fully they are kept calm with a medicated rinse which he tolerates very well.
Bear is an excellent guard dog. He will alert you to any visitor to your home. Bear has bonded to his foster mom and will protect her. This can be a positive or a negative. We are working with a trainer and a behaviorist to calm this protective behavior. In a more calm household Bear may not have any difficulty adjusting but his foster mom lives across the street from park with a lot of strangers which can excite Bear.
Bear is an sweet soul that needs a calm and understanding but strong hand to help him adjust to life off of the chain.
While in rescue Bear has been neutered, had senior bloodwork done and has received a dental cleaning, He is a very healthy guy and is ready to find his forever home!
