This mint coin is part of a series of Medallic Postal Cover, combining historical US stamps with limited edition medals that are postmarked on a date of historic significance.
This silver medallion and envelop is postmarked February 23, 1976 celebrating the anniversary of US General Baron Von Steuben joining Washington on this date ~200 years prior to fight against the British during the US Revolutionary War.
His full name was Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand von Steuben and was born September 17, 1730, at Magdeburg, Germany. In 1777-78, General George Washington established an army at Valley Forge to fight the Redcoats for freedom and independence from British. Baron von Steuben arrived at camp, recommended by Benjamin Franklin and the French, to offer his services since he was an expert drill officer. He was quickly appointed Inspector General responsible for the training of the Army. This German officer took General Washington's disparate fighters and molded them into a disciplined army that would go on to win the Revolutionary War.
Baron von Steuben was also credited for the creation of the US Military Academy formalized officer training; later known as Reserve Officers? Training Corp (ROTC) and then the Officer Candidate School (OCS) was also founded.
The uncirculated coin was minted to commemorate Baron von Steuben?s dedication and the significant role he played in the American Revolution War. On the front side of the coin is a portrait of the Baron with soldiers being trained and the words ?THIS IS MY MILITARY ACADEMY? on top. The back side has the inscription ?BARON VON STEUBEN JOINS WASHINGTON?S ARMY ISSUE NO. 32, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania?. In quotations it also has ?OUR PROSPECTS BEGIN TO BRIGHTEN?.
This Commemorative Medal is sealed in the original package. Both medal and stamps are in excellent condition ready to be included into any assembly of stamp and coin collections. It would also be a great gift for a serious philatelist, hobbyist, or the beginning coin & stamp collector.
