Aqua's story
Aqua was brought in to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona on 09/08/18 after the owners signed a no pet lease. Aqua was being worked with on leash reactivity with her owners and a trainer. When coming into our shelter we decided to help work her through the issues a bit more before she was put up for adoption.
Aqua has never really been allowed to meet dogs on leash, when she would get overly excited about a dog approaching her owners would immediately move away from the dog and take her elsewhere. Aqua has been able to be off leash with other dogs while in our care and has worked on being appropriate on leash when walking. She still has some reactivity if she gets surprised by a dog but she is easily redirected with some high value treats.
The department of corrections has been working with Aqua through a program called New Beginnings Canine. In this program two department of corrections inmates worked with her on her leash reactivity towards people, cars and dogs. Aqua has calmed down on leash around dogs but does have some days when she seems to be more reactive. Aqua knows many basic obedience commands and is very food motivated so it is easy to redirect her attention when she is getting overstimulated by the other dogs.
Aqua will do best in a home with older children, (13yrs+), no cats or small dogs, mandatory dog introduction will do best with male dogs only. The adopters should take Aqua to further training to help work with her reactivity in a more suitable environment. Aqua has come very far from where she was when she was first brought to us but she will need a consistent home and a less stimulating environment to continue to work her through these issues.
Aqua is NOT a dog that will do well at dog parks, for further socialization please speak with a trainer about doggie socialization options.
