ANTIQUE CHARCOAL SAD IRON
Yours for $200
Condition: very good
The charcoal iron was a form of iron which contained heat and was popular from the late 1800's through 1930's. In early versions red-hot coals were placed in the iron and kept burning with small bellows and air vents that could be adjusted. Later versions burned charcoal that was lighted in the iron and allowed to burn to a glowing heat.
This example is exceptionally beautiful, from the graceful form of the handle to the decorative scallops on the lower portion of the lid. It has a beautiful smoothness to the surface and a mellow patina only age can impart. It has a curved wood grip, Austrian style. The iron is hinged at the heel area and fastens at the toe with a round latch. The lid has cut out designs down both sides. Down towards sole on both sides of the base are 20 little round vent holes. The small vent on heel has an adjustable metal plate. There are 2 identification markings on the inside.
