1981 Yamaha VIRAGO XV920R
1981 Yamaha VIRAGO XV920R

Description

For Sale 1981 Chain Drive Virago XV920R

Excellant running, vintage 43 year old, mostly all-original bike with only 9K original miles.

I am second owner since new. Has the highly sought after chain drive and monoshock rear end. One of the most preferred Vtwin air cooled bikes for resto-mod and hot rod bike builders. This example though is so good, and hard to find, it might just warrant a full restoration.

Bike has been indoor, climate controlled stored since last being ridden in the early ’90’s. Levers and controls function smooth and easy. Cast aluminum wheels and rotors are true and spin nice and straight.

Carbs and both OEM petcocks have been rebuilt and work great. Engine Oil, Filter, and Plugs are new. Engine is mechanically sound and reliable with no further work needed.

Bike hits and fires at the touch of the button, idles great, throttles and accelerates great, runs and shifts great. This increasingly hard to find and super rare (especially in this kind of condition), 920cc chain drive V-twin Yamaha hot rod was built and sold only in 1981 and 1982. It has been is a favorite of resto-mod bike builders around the globe for decades. It has no leaks of any kind.

  Charging system is fully functional.

Monoshock rear end and forks have smooth action with no creaks, squeeks, or groans. Front forks are leak free.

To reiterate, this is a mostly all-original Yamaha classic - excepting some interesting red accent paint that original owner added as a way to make the appearance a little more “hot roddish” (in his opinion). The chrome exhaust has been changed to a open flowing type, for better sound and power. I am including also in this sale a brand new, never installed, competition exhaust for this bike.

All lighting, switches and guages work as delivered new from Yamaha. All plastics are in tact and not damaged or cracked, It has all the plastic posts/grommets on the bodywork. Yamaha machines of this era typically have deteriorated plastics simply due to ging out. Sheet metal and fuel tank are solid. Exterior of fuel tank has a smooth and easily repairable dent in right side where it appears the bike tumped on its side at some point in its life and the tank shows a certain patina with some odd “cracking pattern in the paint” - but metal is solid and ready for custom paint or reconditioning. Interior is in good condition. Keyed locking gas cap still functions, and seals nicely. Seat lock and helmet are functional. Factory covered seat is hinged at rear and cover is not torn, ripped, or dry rotted. Chrome and brightwork is in reasonably good condition and only needs a touch of love and some metal polish to return to full lustre. The factory OEM painted and powder coated parts on the engine and chassis are also in great condition though some of the silver painted parts have yellowed a bit over time and now appear a bit “golden”

Front brakes need a fluid flush and possibly a master cylinder rebuild but the dual calipers are free and functional and both wheels spin with no bind, drag, or resistance. Rear drum brake is fully functional. Tires are descent, but they old and of the period, but they hold air and suprisingly show no dry rot cracking. OEM chain case, chain and sprockets are in great shape and have no kinks in links - rear wheel turns nice and free. Clutch action and shifting is great.

Overall this classic, vintage bike is a great find. Fix the front brakes and ride the thing as a daily? Restore it back to its original glory? Or do a full restomod superbike build? Maybe a street tracker or flat tracker tribute? This machine offers many possibilties.

  As published by Wikipedia -

The Yamaha XV920R is a Japanese motorcycle. It was introduced in 1981, along with the XV750 Virago. In addition to larger engine displacement it featured "standard" styling and technical features, in contrast to the cruiser style of the Virago . This model was geared toward European-style sport touring.

The XV920R had a unique enclosed chain final drive, a large, 8-inch-diameter (200 mm) headlamp, a high-capacity sculpted fuel tank, and rear-set controls and footpegs. Like the Virago, it had a stamped-steel backbone frame, also serving as part of the air-induction system. It had a mono-shock rear suspension, with (air) preload and damper adjustments. The front suspension had air preload adjustment only.[1]

In 1981 (XV920RH) it was offered only in candy metalflake maroon. In 1982 (XV920RJ), the only color offered in the United States was silver with black trim. US sales were discontinued after 1982, with many units still unsold. The rear end styling, with its swingarm-mounted fender (now commonplace), drew much criticism.

Currently popular with a cafe racer and modified bike builders, because of the V twin engine and monoshock design.
