This is an Ambassador Eb (E-flat) Trumpet made by Olds in Fullerton, California in 1977, less than a year before the company ceased production. This little beauty is in near mint condition, the only flaws being a few spots where corrosion has crept in under the lacquer and a few tiny dings in the bell near the forward brace. I tried to capture them in the photos, but they are so small that it's hard to see them.
The valves work great, as all Olds valves do. All 3 have great compression and very very little wear. The tuning slides are tight, especially the 1st and 2nd valve slides. The 3rd valve and main tuning slides could use a little grease, but the are currently movable with a little more effort than is comfortable.
The case looks like it came out of the factory last year. It smells like an old music store inside. Not a bad smell, in my opinion.
Both of the included original keys work to lock and unlock either latch. The locking mechanism works as it should on both latches. Both latch springs are strong.
There is about a third of a bottle of Norlin valve oil included.
As far as sound and playability go, and these are just my opinions, I think this Eb trumpet sounds brighter than an Olds Ambassador Bb trumpet does. It is very playable, and would make a great "starter" Eb trumpet for an advanced High School player or college music major wanting to learn to read and get comfortable with the relationship between the fingerings and the pitches on an Eb trumpet. In a pinch, this horn could be used on a gig or recital, but a more modern instrument would probably yield better results with less effort on some of the more challenging pieces in the repertoire.
Thanks for looking, and good luck!
