1970 Dodge Challenger
1970 Dodge Challenger

Description

This is a beautifully restored 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Tribute 440 Magnum Shaker. The car is stunningly presented in HEMI Orange flake paint with a black vinyl top, matching Shaker hood scoop and rear duck tail spoiler. This is a completely rust-free Texas/Arizona car. The body is incredibly straight, and panel alignment is fantastic. This amazing Mopar had its original slant six engine replaced with a recently rebuilt and strong running 440 cubic inch Big Block V8 mated to a 3 speed 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission, complete with the quintessential woodgrain automatic Pistol Grip shifter.

The car first received a partial ground up restoration approximately 15 years ago. After purchasing the car 6 years ago, we began the process of completing the restoration, and since then, just about every mechanical part on the vehicle was rebuilt or replaced. During the original build, the stock gauges were replaced with a tasteful set of Classic Instruments gauges in the dash. Although the actual original miles are unknown, the new Classic Instruments odometer currently reads 4,803, which is the total miles since the original restoration 15 years ago. The 440 Big Block was completely rebuilt at 1,297 miles on the current odometer, so all in all there’s 3,506 miles on the rebuilt engine (I have receipts, documentation, and engine build specs for the rebuild).

The engine rebuild is a Street/Strip Performance build, complete with a Comp Cams Xtreme Energy Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft, Edelbrock 800 CFM Carburetor, Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake manifold, Edelbrock Victor Series High Performance Street Water Pump, a Milodon High-Flow 160 degree Thermostat, a set of Hedman HTC Coated Shorty Headers, and a Champion 26” 3 Core Aluminum Radiator w/ Dual Spal Electric fans to effortlessly cool that massive powerplant. The engine delivers all its power to the 3 speed 727 Torqueflite transmission through a 2,500 RPM High Stall Torque Converter, and the transmission delivers that power through the driveshaft to the 8 ¾ rear end with its 3.23 gear ratio. This Mopar rides on 18” American Racing Polished Aluminum Torque Thrust Wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle Sport Tires and will leave a cloud of smoke wherever you want. (A set of rally wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires is also available)

Although this car is 53 years old, it’s in no way short on modern conveniences. It’s also equipped with, an MSD Electronic Ignition, MSD Electronic Distributor, Front Power Disc Brakes, Rear Power Drum Brakes w/upgraded Brake Booster and Electric Vacuum Pump, Mopar Performance High Torque Starter, a 500 Watt Kenwood audio system w/ Bluetooth, hands free calling, and 12“ subwoofer, a set of upgraded Morris Classic Concepts 3 Point harness retractable seat belts, a Borgeson Quick Ratio Power Steering Box to give it a smooth modern steering feel, and a Vintage AC System to keep you cool on the warmest of days.

As far as condition goes, other than a very few extremely minor flaws, the paint is outstanding with absolutely no scratches or oxidation. The custom Hemi Orange flake paint isn’t overpowering, and instead sparkles gorgeously in the direct sunlight. You truly need to see the paint in person to fully appreciate how good it looks. The interior looks and feels new, with its gorgeous black vinyl bucket seats, well-kept carpeting, and snugly fit headliner. And as mentioned earlier there’s no rust to be found anywhere on the car. That being said, the car isn’t perfect. It’s a driver quality car with a 3 out of 5 overall condition rating. The engine runs strong and it starts right up every time. Although I would highly suggest against it, this car could be used as a daily driver due to its relative reliability.

What the car isn’t: It is not a 100 Point Concours Restoration. You won’t be winning any awards at the Pebble Beach Concours with this ride!

What the car is: It’s a super fun and enjoyable weekend driver that you can take a lengthy cruise in or just cruise to your local car show. You can drive this car without worrying constantly about getting a tiny rock chip and just relax and take in the ride. Everywhere you go in this car people will waive and give you the thumbs up. At local events this car really turns heads as a fan favorite, and it will likely score you a trophy or two at one of those local car shows, as evidenced by the numerous local car show awards the car has been awarded here in the Phoenix metro area. If you are looking for a classic Mopar that looks and drives amazing but won’t completely break the bank, this may be the Mopar for you!
