1956 Matchless G80S Frame Number Obscured During RestorationEngine 56G80S29642 (Bike Titled to the Engine)ABOUT THE MATCHLESS:"The Model G80S - Fast... Safe... Stylish... And superbly finished" Matchless ad in The Motor Cycle, July 1955.Associated Motor Cycles announced its post-war range of Matchless and AJS heavyweight singles in June 1945. Housed in a rigid frame with Teledraulic front fork, the ruggedly built overhead-valve engine drove via a four-speed gearbox. Hairpin valve springs were adopted for 1949 and a swinging-arm frame introduced, the latter initially for export only, models so-equipped being suffixed 'S'. Cleverly, AMC had devised this frame by the simple expedient of producing a new suspension-carrying rear subframe that bolted on in place of the old rigid back end. Thus, it proved a relatively simple matter for owners of older rigid models to update them.ABOUT THIS MOTORCYCLE:The G80S offered here presents very well. It entered Mr. Jacobs' collection in 1986 and was restored during subsequent years in the Jacksonville area and then remained beautifully preserved in the Collection.On my acquisition about 18 months ago, new tires and tubes were fitted along with a thorough 'fettling' to include a rebuild of the front forks with new seals and bushings (they were stuck solid), complete rebuild of the original Lucas magneto, anti wet-sump valve, petcocks (rebuilt), AGM battery, wiring work (much was mis-wired) and much else I've likely forgotten.This bike is really museum quality, it presents extremely well despite having been restored in the 1990s and starts on the first or second kick now that it has been looked after mechanically. The fuel system was completely dry when I got the bike and the carburetor needed nothing. The speedometer and odometer are operational. You are welcome to inspect this during the course of the auction - just reach out to me directly. I had to reformat the starting, running and riding video for eBay, so if this doesn't process correctly, reach out to me for that as well.This and a very nice 1953 AJS Model 20 from the same estate collection that I have listed this week were purchased for eventual resale at an event that was cancelled. In addition, the work that they both needed to be operational took much longer than anticipated. These bikes need to find new loving homes and their reserve prices are very reasonable. I am a collector automobile dealer and broker as well as an auctioneer - I have worked for many of the large auction houses including motorcycle auctions. I have my own bikes and have ridden for many years and I would not be ashamed to have these bikes in my personal collection, but space is at a premium!Acceptable forms of payment include cash on pickup, bank wire transfer or certified funds received within seven days of auction close.
