DESCRIPTION:
This is a 1923 Essex (part of Hudson) 4-cylinder Raceabout Roadster with split-rim wire wheels. It has a 18.2 hp, 179.0 cu. in. four-cylinder engine, solid front axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, three-speed manual transmission with rear semi-elliptic leaf springs, dual side-mount spares also mounted on split-rim wire wheels (need new tubes and are pretty old) and two-wheel mechanical brakes with emergency brake. The wheelbase is 108-1/2". This Essex has been preserved in very presentable condition. The body and paint are all in very good condition, but the paint has some paint scratches and small chips (some have been touched up) as it has been used in parades and driven occasionally. Both the front seat and rumble seat are upholstered in tucked black vinyl, which is in very good condition and nicely complements the black dashboard and carpeted floor. The 4.50 - 21 tires are newer and have minimal tread wear. The engine is clean, well detailed and runs well, and the chassis, running gear and tires are also very good. There are some small cracks in some of the sheet metal as is expected of a car that is 90 years old. Klaxon horn works, but one headlight and one tail light are out. Speedometer and odometer are not working, but odometer reads 25,000 miles. More photos are available upon request. The electrical system is still 6 volts, but relays have been added to take the load off of the original switch. A 6V electric fuel pump has been added as well as a fuel pressure gauge and regulator (under the hood). The steering wheel on the vehicle is larger than original, but an original steering is included in case the buyer wished to replace it. Also included are a modern bottle jack, lug/cap wrench, owners manual, hand-drawn blueprints of the vehicle, old photos (20-40 years old), 2 flags, flag holder, large rear flag holder, and some other accessories. Please note that this vehicle really is a 1923 Essex, but was modified and the the rumble seat box added to be a raceabout. Rumble seat folds up and down on a hinged panel, and has detachable arm rests. Rear trunk has been added which is in excellent condition. It is a lot of fun to drive, and rides very well (and does not overheat in the 105+ degree Arizona summer heat!). An attractive car and a very presentable older restoration, this Essex is ideal for the collector in search of rarity but does not want to spent nearly $1 million currently listed on another site for an original raceabout that was made for the president of Husdon Motors in 1924. A $500 deposit is required within 48 hours of purchase, and full payment must be made within 7 days. Payment may be made via cash (in person), wire transfer, money order or cashiers check. All money orders and cashiers checks must be verified. The car is garaged in zipcode 85629 and I can help coordinate shipment and pick-up.
