Corporate Affairs is a Group function based at Babcock's London Head Office with responsibility for Government Relations, Communications, Strategy, ESG and International. Led by the Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, the team works closely with the Group Executive Committee to make Babcock a strong, safe and unified global business, that delivers year on year sustainable growth and better outcomes for our customers, communities and culture.
The roleAs the UK Parliamentary Relations Manager, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You will support the Group Director of UK External Affairs in the planning, coordination and delivery of Babcock's UK public affairs strategy and outputs, taking personal ownership of particular groups, projects and on–going tasks/responsibilities.
Day–to–day, you'll develop, refine and manage the company's relations and activities with the UK and Scottish Parliaments. Where required, assist in facilitating ad hoc relationships in Whitehall, and with relevant industry associations, and broader, political opinion–forming stakeholders. In addition, work across the group and central functions in support of business development, events and communications activities as required.
Responsibilities:
Own, hone and develop the company's relationships in Parliament across all parties in Westminster and Hollyrood.Help advise senior management on key new policy areas, legislative proposals and regulatory issues – both risks and opportunities – that affect the business in the UK.Continue to develop and oversee a formal, Group–wide Parliamentary monitoring/issues management system.Support the team in raising Babcock's profile discreetly with key, selected political stakeholders at a number of levels, increasing external understanding of the whole business and its associated interests.Prepare briefing material for senior colleagues, including CEO, Sector CEOs and board members ahead of meetings with Parliamentarians.Draft/co–ordinate any responses to Government or Parliamentary inquiries or requests for information.Write, edit and dispatch a (monthly) newsletter for Parliamentarians, working with colleagues across the business to source and shape copy and narrative aligned to company aims.Assist the Group International Government Relations Director with UK–facing elements, principally around relevant internationally facing Select Committees and Parliamentarians. This role is full time, 37.5 hour per week and will be based at Wigmore Street 3 days per week. There is a requirement for attending face–to–face meetings at least 1 day per week in parliament and requirement for flexibility to attend networking events outside of work hours.
Essential experience of the UK Parliamentary Relations Manager:
Good working knowledge of the current political scene, UK government and Parliamentary processes, party political structures and key political contactsGood working knowledge of the current Scottish political scene – desirableExperience of working in Parliament, Think tank or Public Affairs AgencyUnderstanding of the sensitivities of PLCs when approaching decision–makersExperience of planning and delivering successful public affairs campaigns Qualifications for the UK Parliamentary Relations Manager:
Educated to Degree level or equivalent in relevant subject. Please note that this position is subject to national security vetting. You must be a sole UK national who is able to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements (this will include obtaining SC).
