Open Letter To Gumtree And ALL artists
I am not part of the artworld whereby they value my art...that is my job. Nor is my art offered as an investment, I want to separate art and investment.
If a doctor or lawyer did not receive fair renumeration for their efforts THERE WOULD BE AN OUTCRY!!!!
I look at intellectual property the same as bricks and mortar property...if someone prefers to buy a five star hotel as opposed to a B & B that's their decision. I have focused on the average of the extremes of art prices and come up with a selling price for this piece.
Why am I doing this, because at present I am not a professional artist?...I am doing this because I wish every artist viewing this and all around the world to raise their prices to a point where making art is equitable with making a living. Already some galleries are doing great things for new artists, but they still charge average 50% COMMISSION!!
Why can't even unkwown artists receive high prices for their creative endeavours... THE SAME AS NEW PROPERTY has its value?... And rather than flood the market and minimising margins the higher prices would produce the opposite...EVEN A MONKEY WITH CATERACTS CAN SEE THAT!!!!
Now, onto the painting. I created it as part of a series of elephant works in 1997 whereby I wished to raise awareness concerning the plight of these beautiful animals. This one was an inkline where only green Indian Ink was used in various dilutions. The artist paper it was drawn on has been deliberately 'wrinkled' to look like the skin of an elephant, as per photograph no. 5.
Incidently, there was a larger elephant piece from that period which was two elephants 'trunk hugging' each other in blue and yellow acrylic on robust art paper about A0 size called simply "COMFORT"which was sadly lost in the Glasgow Barras market in 2004. It would be interesting to see if that turns up.
