Here is my very nice Rover 216sli. This one comes fitted with the very smooth very reliable Honda D16 16 valve engine, so no worries of Rover head gasket issues that you sometimes have with the K-Series engines.
The car is in overall not bad condition and I would say very good for its age and mileage. There are a few cosmetic blemishes on the paintwork down the passenger side that you can see under closer inspection (little bit of paint pitting from a previous documented paint repair) and a bit of discolouration on the rear of the boot behind the spoiler, but overall nothing to really worry about unless you are looking for a particularly exceptionally well kept car cosmetically, in which case this one is not really for you.
Mechanically this car is very sweet, the engine is smooth and doesn't use any fluids, apart from needing a little top up of oil every now and then which is normal for all cars I would say. The brakes are very nice (and power assisted), the gearbox is very smooth (5 speed manual) with plenty of life left in the clutch too.
The last MOT the car had there were some issues that have been rectified, most notably of which was the O/ S rear inner sill which has been repaired and double skinned, which looking through the cars history has also been done on the N/ S at some point also. Also fitter were new track rod ends and CV boots as they were failing too and a couple of minor issues with the rear lights (couple of bulbs out and a discoloured indicator bulb)
I have had this car for just under a year and in that time it has covered a good few miles, down to the west country and a few trips up to Manchester and back as well as plenty of day to day motoring, all of which has been trouble free. Never failed to start even on cold morning, nor has she ever left me at the side of the road. So I would call this a very usable and practical classic. She also returns between 40 to 45 MPG as well and is happy to run on E10.
Now with all that being said I will highlight the only real issue that the car has and that is on the rear O/ S wheel arch there is a small amount of rust (non structural in location) that could do with treating at some point in the near future, as well as the aforementioned paint issues and a little bit of rust bubbling on the front wings. However I would not be concerned about the next MOT on these, which is due at the end of May 24 from memory.
Overall I would say the car is a great day to day runner with the potential to either be restored sympathetically or used as she is.
This car comes with a small amount of "official" history, including its original Rover handbook with a few stamps in and some old MOT's, but also supplied with the car is a beautiful hand written log book of servicing, tanks of fuel used including mileage, repairs undertaken and all sorts of other interesting bits and bobs which I think not only is it a sadly now disused practice but also shows that the car has been loved for the large portion of its life, most of which until recent years was a single owner based on the handwriting.
Overall I have loved owning the car and am slightly sad to be parting with it as it reminds me of spending many miles in my Grandfathers very similar car but unfortunately with things the way they are these days and the sort of mileage I do and the family requirements it appears that the Rover is no longer going to be the best car for our long term needs.
