The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has a great opportunity for a Programme Manager, Commonwealth Chemistry, to join us on a part-time or full-time (27-35 hours per week) temporary basis to cover maternity leave.
At the RSC we embrace flexibility and offer hybrid working, which means our teams come together when they need to collaborate. Although this role is contractually based at either our London or Cambridge offices, you will also be able to work from home within the UK, with the expectation that you will attend our offices and travel as needed for your role. In this role, you will attend our offices at least 1 day per week (initially more frequently to support your induction) and may also travel within the Commonwealth, very occasionally if required, and work occasional evenings and weekends. If you need flexible working arrangements, please outline this in your application.
This role presents an opportunity to work on a programme that will have a large impact on the chemistry community at an international scale - Commonwealth Chemistry. Creating strong relationships and partnerships with organisations that support the chemical sciences in Commonwealth nations will be central to this role and is an integral part of our international ambition.
The Federation of Commonwealth Chemical Societies, or simply Commonwealth Chemistry, involves working with chemical societies in the Commonwealth in which all countries are included on equal terms. The uniqueness of bringing this group of diverse countries together under an umbrella organisation is that it mirrors the concept of the Commonwealth as an aspirational and inspirational entity that provides strong role models. A crucial activity for delivering the desired outcomes of the Federation is the running of a biannual Commonwealth Chemistry Congress and the annual virtual Poster competition which highlights the impact of chemists in Commonwealth countries on achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The successful candidate will lead the development and delivery of our Commonwealth Chemistry programmes, bringing together our key stakeholders in new partnerships to tackle the sustainable development goals. The candidate will be part of the Secretariat, supporting the work of the Executive Board and its committees.
An important aspect of this role is understanding the needs of less developed countries and identifying ways to share best practices and knowledge including the provision of mechanisms for accessing research infrastructure. The Programme Manager for Commonwealth Chemistry will work in a matrix environment with colleagues across the Royal Society of Chemistry to meet the aims of the initiative, with responsibility for a budget of approximately 300K.
