Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Support to Teaching staff and lessons
Prepare and set up equipment for lessons as requested by teaching staff. Remove equipment from the laboratory, and clean and return it to storage once lessons are finished.Take an active part in assisting the teacher in the lesson. This may involve explaining the use of specialised equipment in modelling scientific concepts; one to one work with students; demonstrating equipment or apparatus etc. Maintain a clear, clean and safe environment for students to work in.
Equipment, Maintenance and Repairs
Maintain and update the record of department equipment including the current location of apparatus, logging and labelling of new equipment, and ensuring items are repaired or replaced as needed.Build equipment as requested by the department staff, using soldering and fabrication skills.Carry out the electrical safety check on all electrical equipment in the department once a year as required by the Health and safety Policy.Ensure that all electrical sockets, lights, taps & drains, heating equipment, door furniture, windows, ceiling tiles and anything else are in working order and send requests for repair to the Estates Team when necessary. Keep a log of all department books loaned to students and follow up with students who have not returned books. Give out radioactive materials from the radioactivity cupboard at the time of the lesson and ensure these are returned afterwards.Maintain health and safety requirements, ensuring that the radioactive cupboards are locked and that no flammable materials are kept nearby.
Other
Assist with the handing out of set work to classes without a teacher.Assist with the taking of a register of classes within the department. Accompany teaching staff on Department College trips.Provide support to and prepare labs/classrooms for special events such as Open evenings, Introductory days, Year 10 days and Taster days.
