This MGB Roadster was first registered in April 1969. I bought it in January 2017 from a London dealer who had taken it in part exchange, and chosen sell it on without warranty.
Being an historic vehicle, road fund licence is free and classic car insurance is very affordable. It is exempt from requiring an M.O.T. test, but one can be arranged if required. Any inspection is invited.
It was completely stripped down, and work started on the underneath. LH and RH sills were replaced, including both castle rails. New replacement floor pans, the gearbox cross member, both jacking points, and both rebound mounts were welded into place. The fuel tank was removed and checked, but found to be good - it had been recently replaced, as had the rear spring hangers. Both LHS wings were replaced, and new replacement panel sections welded in to replace both RHS lower rusty sections. The original aluminium bonnet was replaced by a new steel one.
Both doors bottoms were in rust free condition, requiring little attention.
The body, and all other previously removed painted parts, were then sent for 'sand blasting' down to bare metal, followed by an 'etch primer' undercoat. When completed, it was moved on again for final preparation, a full respray in British Racing Green, and thorough spray application of underseal.
The engine is in excellent condition, and benefits from having a fitted oil cooler. It has been converted to use unleaded petrol, runs well, is powerful, has good oil pressure, burns no oil, emits no smoke - and sounds wonderful.
The original non-overdrive gearbox was replaced by a warranted fully overhauled all synchromesh overdrive gearbox, c/w. new gearbox mounting. (The speedometer was overhauled and rebuilt to match the new gearbox speedo drive output r.pm., but its existing odometer mileage was left unaltered). The contact breaker system was replaced with a new electronic system fitting completely inside the distributor cap, and the tachometer changed to electronic operation.
The exhaust sytem was completely replaced, as were the rear axle oil seals, the universal joints on the propeller shaft and the 2 rear shock absorbers.
The brake and clutch master cylinders were overhauled, the slave cylinders for clutch and both rear brakes replaced, and the front calipers were fully overhauled, including new pistons. All rear brake linings and front pads were renewed.
A bespoke tailored full set of thick sound insulation was fitted, and topped off with a new MGB carpet set in black. A new tailored carpet set was also fitted in the boot area, along with a carpeted spare wheel cover. The windows were refitted, complete with new rubber seals, and the interior door panels insulated with large self adhesive vibration damping rubber sheets. Waxoil was liberally applied inside the door bottoms. A full set of interior trim, including all new panels, was put in place, and the 2 original leather front seats refitted. New twin horns, light units and rims were fitted, along with a host of other significant improvements. A new vinyl hood with zip-out rear window was fitted.
The last 3 photos include 2 collages, the first taken just after the bare metal priming stage, the second since the BRG respray. All photos, and many more, are available to interested parties.
Finally, the wire wheels were sent off for checking, refurbishing and powder coating. All 5 were fitted with new Falken 165/14 asymmetric radial tyres, complete with new tapes, inner tubes, valves and balancing.
Much more has been done to make this MGB Roadster a car of outstanding strength, appearance and performance. The asking price is in line with current auction prices of similar1969 MGB Roadsters - but which are unlikely to have been so thoroughly and comprehensively renovated.
It comes with lots of old MOT. certificates, receipts and correspondence, 2 manuals (one a full MGB workshop manual), MGB books, and parts catalogues. The current odometer reading of 85,350 miles is supported by the MOT certificates and receipts, and I believe it to be true.
It is being advertising now, in winter - not the best time to sell a convertible!
Ideally, I would like to sell it before Christmas. If not, it will be re-advertised widely next Spring at a higher and more realistic summer price.
Interested buyers are welcome to inspect the car in its garage in Dersingham, near Sandringham, Norfolk.
