Description

Hi, my name is Tom and I have been tutoring full-time since 2020. Throughout this time I have attained a thorough knowledge of all exam boards (AQA, OCR, Edexcel, CIE, etc.) for all Mathematics and Physics courses, as well as all applied modules (Statistics, Mechanics, and Decision/Discrete) for Further Mathematics at A-level. Most importantly, I have used this time to refine a very successful tutoring style with which I have been able to consistently tutor students from C/D grades to achieve their target A/A* grades.

My relatable approach to the tutoring process allows for students to understand interesting key ideas without experiencing the boredom that occurs in the school classroom. I write all my own lesson plans tailored to the student and I have a knack for knowing which ideas are more difficult for students to grasp, taking greater care in explaining those topics for them. My aim is to not only help students in achieving their target grades, but to also get them thinking in the right way to be able to succeed in their independent study at university.

A particular focus is put on taking my students to a point where they can tackle past-paper exam questions on the topic as quickly as possible. This is because getting used to the exact style of questions that will be seen in the exam allows for a much more fruitful use of time rather than focussing only on textbook questions which are often too easy. If a particular topic is too difficult to understand initially, I will always rather take a small step back and spend more time explaining the ideas rather than rushing any of my students through the syllabus. I will only move forward to working through questions when I feel that my students are ready.

My aim is to eventually bring all my students to the point that they are confident enough to work through their own past-papers by themselves. This is where the hardest work is done by the student (a lot of homework!) and it's the point that is usually reached by the time they are beginning revision for their summer exams. At this point my tutoring sessions focus specifically on myself explaining the questions that my students are getting wrong in these past papers. This fine-tuning approach at this stage is the most efficient use of our time as our session time is spent solely on improving the weak spots which have been identified.

A typical hour-long tutoring session with me will begin with the first 30-40 minutes explaining a topic that my student is struggling to understand in school. If I feel like we are at the stage to do so, we will use the final portion of the session to look at some easier questions, with the aim of moving on to selected past-paper questions on that topic in the next session.

If instead we have reached the point of full past-paper exam question review for the summer exams, then the format of the entire session becomes myself presenting a guided walkthrough for each question that was incorrectly answered in the student's homework.

I am happy to carry out my sessions in-person if you live in Brighton/Hove. I am also able to drive to other towns nearby.

My standard rate is £30 per hour, excluding travel. Please call/text me or email me to arrange a free half-hour taster lesson if interested.

For those interested in my teaching style, a walkthrough for a mechanics exam-style question has been attached. This is available to view in the video tab at the top of this ad. A handful of testimonials from my students of 2023 have also been included as images.

**Please do not contact me with the intention of me solving questions for you during your exam. I will not respond to these queries.**
