Litigation Solicitor / Barrister Port Talbot (Temp Vacancy)

Pay Rate: GBP21.97ph

Full-Time (37 hours)

Job Purpose:

To provide legal advice, research and advocacy primarily within the Magistrates and Crown Court but also in respect of civil law proceedings and to support the Principal Solicitor Litigation in the provision of legal services to Members and Officers of the Council.

Accountabilities:

To undertake and have sole conduct of a mixed caseload relating primarily to prosecution and civil litigation work in any Court, Tribunal, Inquiry or Appeal;To undertake trials and other hearings in the Magistrates Court.To undertake a caseload of contentious/litigious matters including but not exclusively limited to the following functions of the Council Regulatory Services (including in respect of the local authorities Licensing responsibilities); Highways and Public Health, Town and Country Planning, Trading Standards, Environment, Social Services, Debt Recovery, Council Tax, Finance, Education, Corporate Matters (including FOI/EIR and Data Protection), and Crime and DisorderTo prepare complex legal documentation (including Information s, Indictments, bad character applications, hearsay applications and witness summons applications and in civil law particulars of claim, defences and other responses including the preparation and drafting of all legal documentation required in the preparation of court and tribunal proceedings;To attend case conferences and any other meetings as required to ensure the provision of effective and efficient legal advice;To advise upon and where appropriate to provide risk assessment advice in respect of proposed criminal and civil law proceedingsTo represent the Authority in legal proceedings and related court proceedings, alternative dispute resolution processes and the steps necessary to avoid potential disputes;To prepare reports for and attend Council and its Committees and Panels as appropriate and to undertake such other reasonable duties and responsibilities including special projects as may be required by the Head of Legal Services including giving cover as necessary across the range of divisional activities;To identify new statutes, case law and procedural developments relevant to the post and advising client departments accordingly; To ensure that the Legal Assistants are aware of new developments in the law relevant to their work;To assist in the general functions of the Litigation Section of Legal ServicesTo assist when required with the mainstream functions of the Legal and Democratic Services Section;To contribute to the development of new systems and operational changes to improve the provision of Legal Services.
